Are you thinking about migrating to France (or did you do that recently), and do you have children in their school age ? Skolodos helps you and your family to take this hurdle as smoothly as possible, with an accurate approach, the bridging of gaps, as well as advice.
In Ancient Greek, hē hodòs pròs tḕn skholḗn means 'the path to school' but also to knowledge and to leasure. That is the soul of Skolodos : to find a path which leads to a chosen orienation and a sound project for future life, as expected by the French schooling system.
Ahead of departure
You have been thinking about migrating to France, or made up your mind already, and you are wondering how your childre will adapt and what they may expect. This questions is far from obvious. Your child leaves a trusted environment, and will have to find his or her way in a new cultural world, where another language is spoken. How do I make friends ? Will I be able to get by at school?
Skolodos proposed online sessions to focus on these questions in their context, and set up a personalised check-list, talored to your own situation and the specifics of your chilld, in order to grow trust and self-confidence.
Choosing a school
Picking a school for your child is about more than filling a form. If you live in the countryside, the local primary school for the childre of that age is the choice of common sens. In town, or for secundary school in general, choices are more complex : public of private funded ? What is the project of your child ? That is what will be asked in the first place.
Skolodos helps you to make a well-balanced choice. We can also perform enquiries or hold interviews, thereby acting as a matchmaker.
Fostering the transition
The experience in France will very strongly per child. Depending on the age, the changing environment, the presence of other Dutch children in the neighbourhood, and so on. But above all : there will be gaps betweek tne Dutch and French curriculæ. In practice for disciplines like history, but also in terms of skills and methodology. The scientific branches,for insance, are not universal in their teaching approach : the expectation of the French system are rather specific,
Skolodos proposes lessons and content to bridge thes gaps in the best possible fashion, and thereby enhancing the self-confidence of your child.
Let me introduce myself
I am Bas Dekker (1973), a Dutchman raised in southern Belgium and therefore bilingual. I have lived in the Netherlands for twenty years, and I have been living in France (Clermont-Ferrand) since 2013.
I am currently a physics, technology and math teacher at a secundary school. I also give support lessons in many other disciplines, and I do personal tutoring for children with specifics needs. I have about thirty hears of experience in teaching in different fashions, for all ages, in different languages, and for audiences with various cultural backgrounds.
My services
My services encompass the following items, amonst others :
- Basic lessons in the French language, applied to the practical situations which may occur in the context of a school
- Online lessons in different disciplines, for preparation purposes or to fill the gaps of the missing components of the Dutch curriculum,
- Online sessiions with role-playing games about situations in the French school context
- Adivsory services for parents and children on the choice of a school, and mediation and translation services when problems arise
- Tailor-made learning paths for children with specific educational needs (dyslexia, ADHD, etc)
- Conception of tailor-made learning content, evolving from English via bilingual to French
- (From 2027 onwards) : Summer camps for migrating children and their families in France (Massif Central)
- (From 2027 onward) : an online tool for evaluation and gap-analysis, with the generation of a thourough bilngual reportt
Coaching bundle
I offer a sterters kit with the following items :
- A one hour online session with the whole family to make sure that the chosen bundle of service matches seamlessly with your demand.
- A one hour online session with the children, and possibly with tht parents, around the basic knowledge of the French schooling system and its expectations
- Four sessions of one hour with the children to master the baics of the French language in a schooling context and the common knowledge necessary to master the French program
- A printable PDF document, adapted to the age and the orientation of each child : My first months going to school in France with tips, idiom, and practical daily exercicses (ready september 2026)
